Hey all,
Manager-Man Jean, here. I’ve recently registered DSD into Project Wonderful (another ad service) and added a few (two) new ad boxes to help increase revenues for the site. I realize ads are annoying and distracting, but we all want to feed our favorite artist, right? Just out of curiosity, how many among you would be okay with paying a $5/year fee to get an ad-free experience? (Only those who would pay would be ad free–the rest would still have the ads.)

The problem with this plan is, that you have too few ads for the ad-free plan to be attractive. As of the time of this comment, you have exactly two ads – that is hardly annoying in any way, shape, or form. Now, if you had, say, 10 or 12 ads, maybe with a few pop-ups, (no pop-up blocker is 100% perfect-more than 2 or 3 pop-ups, and even the best pop-up blocker will fail), then the ad-free version would be attractive to most. Now, I’m not advocating an ad-filled direction for the site – just pointing out that your site would need to be A LOT more annoying than it currently is. But, here’s the rub: if you make your site too annoying, then people will stop coming to it, because it’s easier to walk away from a site than put up with one that bothers you – the internet is a fickle mistress. The only way to keep your readers AND have an annoying site, is to have loyal readers who love the comic and will put up with anything, and there aren’t too many strips like that.
